Here are some of things I read this week that made me think. (These are just snippets – click on the title to read the whole thing).
The Line Between a Safe Driver and a Dangerous One Is Just a Single Hour of Sleep from Cari at The Science of Us
“According to one study, staying awake for 18 hours straight can cause the same cognitive impairment as a blood alcohol level of 0.05; at 24 hours, it’s closer to a blood alcohol level of 0.1, more than the legal limit for driving.”
9 Signs That You Are the Co-worker Everyone Vents To from Melissa at The Science of Us
“It’s a valuable role to play in an organization, the researchers acknowledge, but if the emotional toll becomes overwhelming, they offer some advice, the best of which is probably this: Reframe the conversation.”
When Proper Etiquette Meant Changing 4 Times a Day from Lena at The Cut
“While proper etiquette forbade women from certain liberties (like walking on the street at night, or riding bicycles when they were sick), it was also taboo for wealthy women to wear just one outfit a day.”
SNL and Emma Stone give Christmas candles a holiday theme song from Christopher at Entertainment Weekly
“The video – part-Wilson Phillips, part-Band Aid – shows what happens in the life of a peach-scented candle, as it gets re-gifted around the globe. As Bryant warns, however, don’t try to pair the candle with any other cheap gifts. “A lot of people think two gifts are better than one, but that just makes each gift seem smaller and dumb,” she sings.“
A Lot of People Are Overestimating How Many Muslims There Are in Their Country for Jesse at The Science of Us
“This sort of overestimation appears to be fairly common, regardless of the minority group in question. In the Anti-Defamation League’s 2015 annual survey of anti-Semitic attitudes around the world, for example, it noted that “30 percent [of respondents] believe Jews make up between 1 to 10 percent of the world’s population. Another 18 percent believe Jews make up more than 10 percent of the world’s population. Sixteen percent (16%) responded less than 1 percent….In reality, Jews make up 0.19 percent of the world population, so a lot of people are wildly overestimating here.”
Hello, Dolly! Here are 6 of the coolest and most diverse dolls for holiday gifts this season from Georgette at Cool Mom Picks
“Today, there are so many dolls for girls and boys that capture the beauty of different skin colors, hair textures, and facial features. You just need to know where to look to find your child the perfect companion who looks ‘just like them'."
