December tends to be my busiest month, work-wise. It's also just a busy time of year, with tons of holiday things going on at school and in the community. In all of the bustle of the season, it can be hard to carve out space to reflect on something more meaningful.
For a lot of Christians, an advent calendar is a way to set aside time each day to reflect on the spiritual aspects of the holiday season. It's not a tradition I grew up with, but we started doing one with the kids a few years ago. I will confess, though - it has been hard for me to find resources that are age-appropriate and meaningful.
There is a new Illustrated Advent Calendar we are doing this year, and really enjoying. (We used their giant Illustrated Advent Coloring Posters last year.) The Illustrated Advent Calendar provides a simple way for families to connect during the advent season.
It includes the following:
1) Weekly devotions for families
2) an Advent Calendar with creative activities for families to do together
3) coloring sheets (our favorite!)
4) a Build-a-Nativity activity that families can do together which also ties into the devotions
Tonight the kids and I did some of the coloring sheets, and it was a really creative and peaceful way to kick off this season. On Sunday, we will take turns reading from the first devotional, which is on hope. (And who couldn't use a dose of hope right now?)
